About Green Wing Macaw Parrots
The Green-wing Macaw (Ara chloropterus), also known as the Red-and-green Macaw, is one of the largest and most strikingly colored parrots. Known for its vivid plumage and intelligence, it is native to the forests and woodlands of Central and South America.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: 35 to 37 inches (90 to 95 cm) in length.
- Weight: 1.3 to 1.7 kg (2.9 to 3.7 lbs).
- Plumage: Primarily red with green feathers on the wings, and a blue rump and tail. The facial area is white and bare with red feather lines.
- Beak: Large, powerful, and black.
- Eyes: Yellow, surrounded by the white facial skin.
Lifespan
Green-wing Macaws can live 50 to 70 years in captivity, and sometimes even longer with proper care.
Habitat and Distribution
- Natural Habitat: They inhabit rainforests, deciduous forests, and woodland areas. They are often found near rivers and in swampy areas.
- Geographic Range: Native to regions from Panama through northern Argentina, including countries like Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Bolivia.
