About Scarlet Macaw Parrots

The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is one of the most recognizable and vibrant parrots in the world, known for its striking red, yellow, and blue plumage. This large parrot species is native to humid evergreen forests of the American tropics.

Physical Characteristics

- Size: 32 to 36 inches (81 to 91 cm) in length.
- Weight: 900 to 1,200 grams (2 to 2.6 lbs).
- Plumage: Bright red body, yellow feathers on the wings, and blue flight feathers. The facial area is white and bare, with small red feather lines.
- Beak: Large, powerful, and black with a horn-colored upper mandible.

- Eyes: Pale yellow to light green, surrounded by the white facial skin.

Lifespan

Scarlet Macaws can live up to 50 years or more in captivity, and in some cases, they can live up to 75 years with proper care.

Habitat and Distribution

- Natural Habitat: Inhabit rainforests, deciduous forests, and areas near rivers and other bodies of water.
- Geographic Range: Native to Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico through Brazil and Peru.
